Summer is here! With half of the year behind us, it’s time to make the most of the long days, embrace that buzzing energy of aperos and BBQ… The slower business months of summer are also a great time to get active and contribute to your community and the environment. Whether you’re on vacation or among those holding up the fort at the office, here are some ideas for you and your teams to do good over the summer period:
1. Participate in a run & raise funds for your favorite charity
Min. time required: 1 hour
There are plenty of outdoor races happening over the summer, if you’re planning on running a race, make it count by raising funds for your favorite cause. Find a race, pick a cause, spread the word, and get your colleagues, friends, and family involved to support you and the cause. To help you get started, here are some upcoming races in Switzerland from a couple of our charity partners:
- August 10: Join the Innocence in Danger Nordic Walking Team at the Glacier 3000 Run
- September 1: Super Run in support of the Fondation Jeunesse & Familles
- September 21: Join The Mud Day in support of Medair
- October 6: Course de l’Espoir (Run for Hope) in support of the Ligue genevoise contre le cancer
2. Clean up & get creative at the beach/lake/river/park
Min. time required: 5 minutes
Heading to the beach? The lake? A river? Or perhaps the mountains? Bring a bag with you and pick up any trash you find along the way. In just a couple of minutes, you can have a direct, visible impact on your surroundings–making your time at the beach even more enjoyable. And if you’re feeling creative, you can even turn your “treasures” into art or upcycle them.
3. Share & develop your skills while helping out a charity
Min. time required: 30 minutes
We’ve all got skills and talents, or maybe, there are some we’d like to develop further and apply in a real setting. Use and develop your skills by helping out a nonprofit to help them achieve their mission, develop their strategy and reach more supporters. On our platform, a variety of missions are at your fingertips, whether it’s to translate documents, mentor a qualified migrant looking to reignite their career, help with a strategic plan, optimise a website, edit videos, write donor letters, draft legal contracts, design a brochure… There are plenty of skills to share and ways to help, whether you’re at or away from the office. Skills-based volunteering missions are tangible ways to contribute and using your skills for good, enabling you to have a direct impact, remotely.
4. Give your clothes, shoes & electronics a second life
Min. time required: 30 minutes (depending on how much you’ve got to sort through!)
Didn’t get the chance to finish spring cleaning? Clutter getting in your way? It’s not too late–sort and donate your used (but usable) stuff to charity. Waste takes many forms, and our clothes, shoes, and electronics are no exception. Why not give them a second life? Embrace the circular economy and donate them to a local charity, like Caritas.
5. Make your team outing impactful
Min. time required: 2 hours
Summer parties, team BBQs, or other team building activities can be even sweeter, and meaningful, by supporting a cause. With a direct, visible impact of your efforts, you’ll have a sense of achievement and grow on a personal and team level. You could spend an afternoon at a retirement home, volunteer at a farm while learning about permaculture, donate blood, or spend an evening helping out at a soup kitchen (like the Soupe Populaire). You could also get a chance to meet new people from your company or neighborhood.
There are plenty of ways to contribute to the community and summer is the perfect time to do just that, whether you’re in the office or away on vacation. Bring these ideas to life with your team, and make doing good a part of your company’s culture this summer.
It’s not always easy to find the time or know where to begin. If you’d like to get started, and make doing good easy, fun, and measurable at your workplace, contact us and find out how we can help.
